Location: Oakville, Ontario
Client: Mrs. Thompson
Issue: Basement dampness and sump pump failure
Service: Interior waterproofing system with sump pump replacement
Mrs. Thompson, a long-time Oakville resident, began noticing damp patches on her basement floor and lower walls. Despite owning a sump pump, water occasionally pooled near the walls after heavy rain. A quick inspection revealed her existing sump pump was outdated and operating inconsistently. She also had no interior drainage system in place to handle groundwater intrusion.
After a comprehensive interior inspection, we identified that the existing sump pump lacked the capacity to manage heavy water flow, and the absence of a proper drainage channel along the interior walls was allowing moisture to spread into the basement floor. We proposed a two-part solution:
1. Interior Trenching: We removed sections of the basement floor around the perimeter to create a trench for the new drainage system.
2. Drain Tile System Installation: A perforated drain tile was installed along the trench to capture incoming water and direct it to the sump pit.
3. Sump Pump Replacement: The old pump was removed and replaced with a modern, energy-efficient unit capable of handling higher volumes. We also installed a sealed sump liner with an airtight lid.
4. Moisture Barrier: A dimpled drainage membrane was applied to the base of the interior walls to guide any wall seepage down to the drain tile.
5. Restoration: The floor was restored with new concrete, leaving a clean and finished appearance.
Following the installation, the basement remained completely dry—even during a series of intense spring storms. The new sump pump handled the increased water volume effortlessly, and the moisture concerns Mrs. Thompson had for years were eliminated. She now uses her basement as a safe and dry storage area.
“The crew at Direct Waterproofing was knowledgeable and polite. They worked quickly and left everything tidy. I can finally stop worrying about water in my basement every time it rains.”
— Mrs. Thompson, Oakville
1. What is interior waterproofing and how is it different from exterior waterproofing?
Interior waterproofing involves managing water that enters from inside by creating drainage channels under the basement floor. Exterior waterproofing prevents water from penetrating the foundation walls from the outside. Interior systems are ideal when outside excavation isn’t possible or practical.
2. How long does sump pump replacement take?
Most sump pump replacements can be completed within a single day. When combined with a full drainage system, the job may take 2–3 days, depending on basement size.
3. Will interior waterproofing make my basement usable as living space?
Yes. Interior waterproofing keeps your basement dry and prevents future moisture issues, making it safer to finish the space for recreation, storage, or living purposes.
4. What type of sump pump do you install?
We install high-efficiency submersible sump pumps with sealed covers and check valves. We also offer battery backup systems for protection during power outages.
5. Is interior waterproofing disruptive or messy?
While the process involves breaking concrete and some temporary dust, we use dust barriers, clean work practices, and restore all flooring sections afterward to leave your basement neat and functional.
