Case Study: Exterior Waterproofing to Stop Persistent Basement Leaks in Barrie

Location: Barrie, Ontario
Client: The Richards Family
Issue: Recurring water intrusion through foundation walls during storms
Service: Full exterior waterproofing system with membrane and drainage tile

The Challenge

The Richards family, located in southeast Barrie near a ravine, had been dealing with intermittent water leaks along one basement wall for over a year. During heavy rainfall or rapid snowmelt, water would enter through the lower wall section and collect along the floor. Despite previous interior patchwork and waterproof paint, the issue persisted and began to damage their finished basement flooring.

Because the foundation wall was fully accessible from the outside, Direct Waterproofing recommended a permanent exterior solution to stop water at the source.

Our Solution

After identifying the cause as hydrostatic pressure from pooling surface water and saturated soil, we implemented a full exterior waterproofing system designed to both seal the foundation and improve drainage away from the home.

Installation Steps:

  • Excavation: Carefully excavated the affected side of the foundation down to the footings, exposing the full wall height.
  • Foundation Wall Cleaning & Crack Sealing: Cleaned the surface and sealed all visible cracks and cold joints with hydraulic cement and elastomeric sealant.
  • Membrane Application: Installed a heavy-duty, waterproof membrane followed by a dimpled drainage board to allow water to flow safely downward.
  • Weeping Tile Installation: Replaced the existing weeping tile system with perforated PVC piping, wrapped in filter fabric and gravel.
  • Backfilling & Grading: Backfilled the trench and regraded the soil to improve surface runoff and minimize future water accumulation.

The Result

The Richards family’s basement remained completely dry through several subsequent storms, and their home’s exterior now promotes proper water movement away from the foundation. The issue was resolved permanently without the need for future interior repairs.

Client Testimonial

Frequently Asked Questions

1. When is exterior waterproofing necessary?
Exterior waterproofing is ideal when water is entering through the foundation walls, especially if the area around your home retains water or is poorly graded.

2. How does it differ from interior waterproofing?
Exterior waterproofing stops water before it penetrates the foundation, while interior systems manage water after it enters. Exterior is more comprehensive and better for long-term protection.

3. How long does the process take?
Most full exterior waterproofing jobs take 3–5 days depending on soil conditions, property size, and weather.

4. Will my landscaping be affected?
Excavation is necessary, but we take care to minimize disruption and restore affected landscaping after the work is complete.

5. Is it covered by warranty?
Yes. We offer long-term warranties on all our exterior waterproofing systems for peace of mind.
