Case Study: Interior Waterproofing System to Stop Basement Wall Seepage in Waterloo

Location: Waterloo, Ontario
Client: The Edwards Family
Issue: Water seepage along basement walls during rainfall
Service: Full interior waterproofing system with membrane, drain tile, and sump pump integration

The Challenge

The Edwards family owns a two-storey home in uptown Waterloo with a finished basement used as a home office and guest suite. For over a year, they noticed water seepage along the base of two basement walls during heavy rains. Carpets near the walls would become damp, and over time, mold spots began forming behind the baseboards.

Due to tight spacing on the exterior side—where a concrete walkway ran alongside the house—excavation was not a viable option. They needed a non-invasive solution that wouldn’t disrupt the finished basement or require removing the walkway.

Our Solution

Direct Waterproofing recommended a complete interior waterproofing system, designed to capture and manage water from inside the basement before it reaches the interior floor. This method was ideal for the Edwards’ situation and allowed for quick installation with minimal impact on their basement layout.

Installation Steps:

  • Perimeter Floor Trenching: Removed a narrow strip of flooring along the affected walls and cut into the concrete slab to create a drainage trench.
  • Drain Tile Installation: Laid a perforated interior weeping tile system in the trench, directing water to a newly installed sump pit.
  • Wall Membrane Application: Installed a dimpled waterproof membrane on the lower walls to guide any moisture down into the drainage system.
  • Sump Pump Integration: Installed a submersible sump pump in a sealed basin with a check valve and optional high-water alarm.
  • Restoration: Re-poured the concrete slab, sealed the edges, and coordinated with the family’s contractor for seamless flooring and drywall restoration.

The Result

The Edwards family’s basement has remained dry through multiple rainstorms. The sump pump system activates automatically, and no further signs of water or musty odors have appeared. They were able to finish basement repairs quickly and resume using the space with confidence.

Client Testimonial

Frequently Asked Questions

1. When is interior waterproofing recommended?
Interior waterproofing is ideal when exterior access is limited or when you want to protect a finished basement without disturbing landscaping or structures outside the home.

2. Does it stop water from coming in?
Yes. It captures water from wall seepage and floor cracks and redirects it safely to a sump pump system before it can reach your basement interior.

3. How long does the process take?
Most interior waterproofing systems are installed in 2–3 days, depending on basement size and complexity.

4. Will I need to remove finished walls or flooring?
Only the lower portions of walls and flooring along affected areas are removed. We provide restoration recommendations to help homeowners return the space to its original condition.

5. Is a sump pump necessary?
Yes. The sump pump is the final step in the system—it collects and pumps out the water that the drain tile captures.
