Case Study: Exterior Waterproofing to Stop Repeated Foundation Leaks in Waterloo

Location: Waterloo, Ontario
Client: The Morrison Family
Issue: Ongoing basement water intrusion through exterior foundation wall
Service: Full exterior waterproofing with foundation membrane and weeping tile replacement

The Challenge

The Morrison family lives in a two-storey detached home in Westvale, Waterloo. For over two years, they battled repeated water intrusion through their basement wall during heavy rainfall and snowmelt. The problem was especially severe along the rear wall of the home, which faced a slight downward slope, causing water to pool against the foundation.

They had already attempted multiple interior fixes and patch repairs, but the issue persisted. With part of the basement being used as a home gym and storage area, they wanted a permanent, exterior-based solution to keep water away from the home entirely.

Our Solution

After evaluating the site and confirming the source of the leaks was hydrostatic pressure against the exterior wall, Direct Waterproofing proposed a comprehensive exterior waterproofing system.

Installation Process:

  • Excavation: Dug along the full length of the affected foundation wall, exposing the wall down to the footing.
  • Crack and Joint Sealing: Sealed existing hairline cracks and cold joints using hydraulic cement and elastomeric sealant.
  • Membrane and Drainage Board Installation: Applied a thick waterproofing membrane followed by a dimpled drainage board to direct water downward.
  • Weeping Tile Replacement: Removed the deteriorated clay tile and replaced it with modern perforated PVC drainage pipe, surrounded by gravel and geotextile fabric.
  • Backfill and Surface Restoration: Backfilled the trench with compacted soil and regraded the surface for improved runoff.

The Result

Since the project was completed, the Morrison family has experienced a completely dry basement—even during several major rainstorms. The foundation is now protected against external water pressure, and the family has full peace of mind knowing the issue has been addressed from the source.
