Location: Aurora, Ontario
Client: The Hassan Family
Issue: Basement flooding caused by municipal sewer backup
Service: Backwater valve installation with permit coordination and rebate assistance
The Hassan family lives in a semi-detached home in Aurora Grove. During a torrential summer storm, the municipal sewer system became overwhelmed, resulting in raw sewage backing up through their basement floor drain and laundry tub. The flooding caused water damage to their flooring and storage items, along with sanitation concerns.
They contacted Direct Waterproofing for a permanent solution to prevent future sewer backups and protect their home during heavy weather events.
Direct Waterproofing recommended the installation of a mainline backwater valve, a one-way plumbing device designed to prevent sewage from re-entering the home during city sewer surges. We also informed the clients that the Town of Aurora offers a subsidy program to cover part of the installation cost for approved flood protection devices.
Installation Process:
Since the installation, the Hassan family has experienced no further backup incidents, even during subsequent storms. The backwater valve provides automatic protection without the need for manual intervention and offers peace of mind against unexpected sewer line failures.
“We had no idea this kind of valve even existed. Direct Waterproofing handled everything, including the permits and rebate paperwork. It was a smart investment and we finally feel safe during storms.”
— The Hassan Family, Aurora
1. What is a backwater valve?
It’s a device installed in your main sewer line that allows water and sewage to exit your home, but blocks it from coming back in during a backup.
2. Is this required in Aurora?
While not mandatory, it’s strongly recommended in flood-prone areas. Aurora offers a rebate program to encourage homeowners to install approved flood protection devices.
3. How long does the installation take?
Most installations are completed in one day, including excavation, valve placement, and concrete restoration.
4. Will I need to apply for a permit?
Yes, and we handle that process on your behalf. A municipal inspection is required after installation to be eligible for the rebate.
5. How much does the rebate cover?
The Town of Aurora may reimburse eligible homeowners for up to 80% of the cost (to a maximum based on the device). We assist with all documentation and submission.

Waterproofing
Inside basement waterproofing is an alternative way of waterproofing your basement. Sometimes the houses are built too close to each other and make it impossible to properly waterproof outside the walls. In these cases we install a membrane on the inside of the basement wall and put in a sump pump.
