Why Does This Happen?
Basements can already be pretty humid places, especially if they are not lived in. They have less ventilation than other rooms, and less sunlight. If humidity levels reach over 50-55%, mold can grow and spread very fast. This can happen if you have a leak that causes water to enter the interior of your basement, or if damp is coming through the walls or the floor.
If water pools against your home during heavy rainfall, or finds its way in through walls, floors, and points of entry due to hydrostatic pressure, then the basement will start to become more and more damp. This will raise the humidity level, and cause mold and mildew to thrive.
There may be a particular reason why your basement has a high humidity level. Identifying the damp and leaks, and applying a solution to stop them, will help to prevent the growth of mold.
