Case Study: Sump Pump Installation to Prevent Basement Flooding in Kitchener

Location: Kitchener, Ontario
Client: The Zaman Family
Issue: Basement water accumulation during heavy rainfall
Service: Sump pump installation with sealed basin and backup alert system

The Challenge

The Zaman family had been experiencing basement dampness and occasional water pooling along the edges of their foundation during heavy rains. Their Kitchener home, built in the early 1980s, did not have a sump pump system in place. As rainfall increased during the spring, the issue escalated, and they feared a full-scale flood would occur during the next storm.

They wanted a solution that could actively manage water and prevent future damage to their semi-finished basement, which they planned to renovate later in the year.

Our Solution

After evaluating the home’s layout, soil conditions, and water intrusion points, Direct Waterproofing recommended the installation of a new sump pump system with a sealed basin to collect groundwater and expel it safely away from the home.

Installation Process:

  • Sump Pit Creation: Excavated a sump pit in the lowest point of the basement slab to ensure optimal water collection.
  • Pump Selection and Setup: Installed a durable, submersible cast-iron sump pump with automatic float activation.
  • Sealed Sump Liner: Added a sealed sump basin with a lid to minimize noise and prevent debris entry, equipped with a backflow valve and maintenance access.
  • Discharge Line Installation: Routed the discharge pipe away from the home’s foundation and added a freeze-resistant extension.
  • System Testing and Alert: Connected a water level alarm to alert the homeowners if the system ever failed to activate.

The Result

The system was installed in a single day with minimal disruption. During the following rainfall, the pump activated as expected and prevented any water buildup in the basement. The Zaman family reported peace of mind knowing the basement was now protected, and they moved forward with their finishing plans.

Frequently Asked Questions

1. What is a sump pump, and how does it work?
A sump pump is a device that sits in a pit below your basement floor and automatically pumps water out when it accumulates. It’s essential for homes where groundwater or rainwater collects around the foundation.

2. Does every home in Kitchener need a sump pump?
Not all, but many homes—especially older properties without modern drainage systems—benefit significantly from sump pump installation if they experience basement dampness or flooding.

3. How long does the installation take?
Most sump pump installations are completed in one day, including digging the pit, placing the pump, installing discharge lines, and sealing the system.

4. Do you offer battery backups?
Yes. We offer battery backup systems that activate during power outages, providing 24/7 flood protection.

5. Will this eliminate all basement water issues?
A sump pump addresses water accumulation at the floor level. If walls are leaking or foundation cracks exist, we may recommend additional waterproofing for complete protection.
