The Challenge

The Grewal family contacted Direct Waterproofing after experiencing poor air quality and rising humidity levels throughout their home. Their older Waterloo property included a large vented crawl space beneath the main floor, which was unsealed, poorly insulated, and prone to seasonal moisture buildup.

The crawl space floor was exposed soil, and musty odors frequently crept into the living space above. High humidity levels were also driving up their heating and cooling costs.

Our Solution

We recommended a complete crawl space encapsulation system to seal out moisture, improve air quality, and boost the home’s energy efficiency.

Scope of Work:

• Vapor Barrier Installation: Covered the entire crawl space floor and perimeter walls with a thick, reinforced polyethylene vapor barrier.
• Seam Sealing: Taped and sealed all seams and edges to create a continuous moisture barrier.
• Wall Insulation: Applied rigid foam board insulation to crawl space walls for thermal efficiency and to prevent condensation.
• Vent Sealing: Sealed off old exterior vents to prevent humid outside air from entering.
• Optional Dehumidifier (Client Declined): Offered the addition of a crawl space dehumidifier for year-round control, but the client chose passive measures.

The Result

Post-project monitoring showed a dramatic drop in relative humidity and total elimination of musty odors in the home. The crawl space is now clean, dry, and protected—no longer a source of moisture, air leaks, or pest intrusion. The family also reported improved indoor comfort and energy savings.
